RICHMOND – The much-maligned Stop & Shop supermarket in the Chariho Plaza is not one of the stores slated for closure.

Stop & Shop’s Netherlands-based parent company, Ahold Delhaize, announced Friday that 32 “underperforming” stores would be closing, including two in Rhode Island.

One of the Rhode Island stores is located in Johnston, at 11 Commerce Way, and the second store is in Providence, at 176 Pittman Street.

Most of the stores slated to close are in Massachusetts (eight stores) Connecticut (five stores) New York, (seven stores) and New Jersey (ten stores). The closures will occur on or before Nov. 2, 2024.

In a July 12 press release, Stop & Shop President, Gordon Reid said the company would continue to maintain a strong presence in the region.

“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” he said. “As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”

Employees in the closing stores will be offered jobs elsewhere in the company.

Stop & Shop has been remodeling some stores over the past six years, and those stores, Reid said, are performing well.

“These stores are outperforming other Stop & Shop stores that haven’t been remodeled,” he said. “We’re taking these learnings and implementing them at other stores as we build upon our strong foundation, similar to our new Boston flagship location, opened last month in the Allston Yards development.”

Stop & Shop employs about 58,000 associates and after the closures, will operate more than 350 stores in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.

There are 25 Stop & Shop supermarkets in Rhode Island. The company did not reveal if or when the Rhode Island stores would be remodeled.
